About the National Association of Senior Move Managers
NASMM
is a non-profit, professional association of organizations dedicated
to helping older adults and their families with the physical and emotional
aspects of moving. Our members are committed to maximizing the dignity
and autonomy of older adults as they transition from one living environment
to another.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to facilitate the physical and emotional aspects of relocation
for older adults, to increase industry awareness, to establish a national
referral network, to enhance the professional competence of members,
and to promote the delivery of our services with compassion and integrity.
What is a Professional Senior Move Manager?
A Senior Move Manager is a professional who specializes in assisting
older adults and their families with the emotional and physical aspects
of relocation. Many Senior Move Managers have backgrounds in gerontology,
social work, health care, nursing and psychology. All share a commitment
to working with seniors and a desire to do meaningful work.
Although specific services vary, most Senior Move Managers can help
with some or all of the following:
•Developing an overall move plan
•Organizing, sorting and downsizing
•Customized floor plans
•Arranging for the profitable disposal of unwanted items through
auction, estate sale, buy-out, consignment, donation, or
combination of the above
•Interviewing, scheduling and overseeing movers
•Arranging shipments and storage
•Professional packing
•Unpacking and setting up the new home
•Related services, such as cleaning, waste removal, shopping,
senior escort, assisting with selection of a realtor and helping
prepare the home to be sold.
Some Senior Move Managers provide these services directly; others function
in more of an oversight role. Senior Move Managers have extensive knowledge
about the costs, quality and availability of community resources. One
call to a Senior Move Manager can connect you with the services older
adults and their families may need for a smooth and successful move.
Who uses Senior Move Managers?
Senior Move Managers are contacted by various sources:
•The older adults themselves
•Family members
•Banks and trust officers
•Geriatric Care Managers
•Attorneys
•Social Service Providers
•Senior Housing Communities
•Physicians and Allied Health Personnel
•Realtors
Why is Senior Move Management needed?
Most older adults making a transition have not moved in 30, 40 or 50
years and need to downsize considerably. The organizational and physical
tasks associated with planning and implementing such a move can be overwhelming.
Family and friends often want to help, but there may be barriers. Adult
children may be sandwiched between their parents, their careers and
their own family obligations. For family members living far away, the
barriers may be geographic. Some seniors have no surviving children,
or their children are seniors themselves. If illness or death precipitated
the move, the family may already be drained both emotionally and physically.
People age 85 and above are the fastest growing segment of the US population.
At the same time, social changes such as more women working full time
have made it increasingly difficult for family caregivers to provide
all of the support needed for these transitions.
Senior Move Management has emerged to fill the gaps and to make transitions
easier for everyone involved.
